Southside Aquatics Swim Club offers an excellent, professional and experienced coaching team which caters for all levels of swimming development. All Southside Aquatics coaches are members of the Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association (ASCTA).

 

Lachlan Staples - Head Coach

 Head Coach Lachlan Staples came to Southside Aquatics in 2014.  Lachlan has a successful history with Australian swimming and has toured on many Australian teams — including the 2009 Rome World Championships. Lachlan transitioned from athlete to full-time coach in 2012 and is now focused on applying his coaching skills to work with developing swimmers. 

“Having my own swimming career to draw from has helped me immensely with my coaching, by experiencing first hand the tools and processes needed to develop successful swimmers.”

Lachlan was an inaugural winner of the 2016 Paulus Wildeboer Coaching Scholarship. He won again in 2017. He is a silver-licensed coach and leads a team at Southside Aquatics comprising an Assistant Coach and several other coaches. 

 

Ben Vanderstam - Assistant Coach

 Ben joined the Southside Aquatics coaching team in October 2017. Ben is an experienced Bronze-licensed coach, having been at other swimming clubs on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane. He developed an interest in coaching from an early age and particularly enjoys working with squad swimmers to see their hard work bring results in competition.

At Southside Aquatics Ben is the Assistant Coach working with the State team. Ben’s particular focus is on stroke correction and helping young swimmers to develop their technique. “I like seeing small improvements in every swimmer while they enjoy the swimming atmosphere.”

Kira Gibbs - Coach

 Kira has been in a pool since she was 10 weeks old. She has been a competitive swimmer since she was around 10 years old and coaching for over 6 years. Her personal achievements include competition at National Age level in 2015 and 2016 and at the Pacific School Games in 2015 at age 18. Kira counts her greatest achievement so far in her swimming career as achieving seventh place in the Australian national finals of the 200m breaststroke. She was also Girls’ Swimming Captain at Redeemer Lutheran College, 2015.

At Southside Aquatics Kira coaches the under-9’s and also occasionally helps with the Junior, State and National squads. “I love working with the little ones when they’re first starting out – watching them progress so quickly gives me a sense of accomplishment.”

 

 

Kira’s qualifications include:

Matt Carlyle - Coach

 Matt joined the Southside Aquatics coaching team in 2017 after swimming competitively with the club for many years from a young age. His skills and technique as a breaststroke specialist provide an added dimension to his coaching. Matt brings his enjoyment of swimming and experience in competition to his coaching role creating a great rapport with younger swimmers. Matt usually works with the mini squad and sometimes helps with the juniors.

All Southside Aquatics coaches have a current Blue Card.
